New limits for heavy metals in toys

The toy market is an area that develops very quickly and often this development, unfortunately, is not compatible with the quality of toys. According to the statistical data, a warning on an unsafe toy appears in an EU country every day, and these children's products are still at the top of the list of unsafe products in general. It is precisely because of this state of affairs and the need to improve the safety of children's toys and to protect this most vulnerable category of population, international and European standardization bodies regularly update existing ones and develop and adopt new standards.


In January this year, the Institute for Standardization of Serbia adopted one of these standards, which defines the allowed presence of heavy metals in toys and parts of toys, into the national standardization system. This is the standard SRPS EN 71-3: 2019, Safety of toys - Part 3: Migration of certain elements, which determine the requirements and test methods for the release of certain metals - aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium), chromium (VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin and zinc from toy materials and toy parts.


An important change in this standard in relation to the previous version is the alteration of the migration limits of certain elements (e.g. lead) in accordance with Directive 2009/48/EC and can be used to check the compatibility of materials for toys with new restrictions.
